History
The Lucayan Indians were the original inhabitants who survived the developing and fishing trade with Haiti and Cuba until 1942. This was when the Bahamas were discovered by Columbus. Close to the trading route, a group of settlers made up of English religious dissidents arrived in 1647. They were adventurers braving a shortage of food before establishing themselves on Harbour Island. This was the era of pirates, where Blackbeard the pirate was even a magistrate at one time until the islands were colonized in 1717 by Britain. Religion in the Bahamas islands is predominantly Christian with Anglican, Baptist, Methodists, Protestant and Roman Catholics as their main denominations. The pace of life on the islands is relaxed and Bahamians are described as having a laid back attitude.
