Tuesday, November 8th, 2011

Whitsundays is an idyllic island paradise that is set in the azure clear waters of the South Pacific and boasts of impressive reef formations on its fringes. It is one perfect holiday destination for all ages. With its amazing array of attractions and exotic destinations that hugs the azure waters of the South Pacific, Whitsundays is definitely one of those holiday destinations that will definitely take your breath away.

History

The Whitsundays was the direct result of a major volcanic activity some 30 to 50 thousand years ago. The island complex was formed after the rise in the sea level, which formed the islands from the coastal peaks of the prehistoric volcanic formations. The islands of Whitsundays were initially inhabited by a group of aborigines known as Ngaro, which were among the earliest groups of settlers in Australia. They are sometimes referred to as the “Island People” and over the years, this group of aborigines expanded their habitat to cover the northern regions as well as the southern section, where the island chain is located.

James Cook discovered the Island complex of Cumberland in 1770, and after the region was properly surveyed, the islands were divided into 4 smaller island clusters – Sir James Smith Group, Anchor Islands, Lindeman Group and Whitsunday Group. Among the 4 island groups that comprise Cumberland Islands, it was the Whitsunday Group that caught the interest of pioneers that settled on the mainland coast, and it was during the latter part of the 1800s that several grazing leases in Whitsundays were granted.

During the 1920s, the ‘dreamers’ started to put up several huts made of galvanized irons for guests who regularly make short stops in the islands of Whitsunday. It was also during this time when cruise ships sailing along this region of the South Pacific dropped anchor and allowed their passengers to spend time along the shorelines for scones, tea and tropical fruits.

Whitsunday Islands

Usually referred to as the Whitsunday Islands, this enchanting island chain off the coast of Airlie Beach is still officially known as Cumberland Islands. Currently, there are several holiday resorts on Lindeman Island, Hook Island, South Molle Island, Hayman Island, Long Island, Brampton Island, Hamilton Island and Daydream Island.

The essence of an easy going life is only found in the metropolis of Sydney, with its vibrant, vast, beach strewn and sun soaked Aussie land. Sydney has become one of the top ten cities in the world to live in and offers world class cuisine, sport, street culture, fashion and intersections of nationalities. Sydney is filled with beloved tourist attractions such as the Opera House, Harbor Bridge and Bondi Beach. Sydney contains a taste for all whether it is the bustling bars or hidden art galleries, there is plenty for even a seasoned traveler.

Sydney skyline

Sydney is regarded by many as the country’s capital; Sydney inhabitants find their cosmopolitan scene thriving with the arts, business and lots of buzz equaling London and New York. The social calendar in Sydney is a busy one, which means that travelers can enjoy various festivals during any time of the year, but mostly in the summer months.

History
Sydney has a bit of a checkered past. This beautiful city was founded in 1788 during the time the first fleets made their way from England to Australia. However, the history stretches back 40,000 years, when the Aboriginal tribe made its home in the harbor. Urbanization in the city has destroyed evidence of these original settlements, but some of the finest rock carvings still remain. With the arrival of the fleets, conflict began with the Aborigines. The Europeans had superior weapons, and succeeded in getting rid of the indigenous population. The disease of small pox, however, devastated the local Aboriginal population. The early settlers faced disease and drought, but things soon improved. By 1840 the city was given a mayor and corporation, and Sydney University was soon after founded. Sydney expanded by the 20th century, and began embracing multi-cultures including the Asian and European immigration. Sydney today stands as one of the most multi-cultural cities in the world.

Things to Do
Travelers can stroll by the Hunter Valley, which is one of the finest wine producing districts situated north of Sydney. There are over 70 vineyards in the Hunter. The Blue Mountains is forest scenery on the Great Western Freeway which is about 90 minutes from the city. Nature lovers can enjoy numerous bush walks and the gum tree (eucalyptus) which radiates a hazy blue color that has given the Blue Mountain its name. Travelers can visit the city on boat tours. There are many harbor cruises available, and most of them start at Circular Quay. Sydney also offers bus sightseeing tours with a hop on hop off service, covering 22 points of interest including the Darling harbor, Kings Cross and Woolloomooloo.

Nightlife
Nightlife in Sydney is varied and wide. The Rock is considered a more up market area, while King Cross is an established place buzzing with bars, cafes and clubs. The cultural life in the city is diverse such as arts, classical, cutting edge and contemporary. One of the most popular clubs in the city is known as Home. The Home consists of four different rooms, each playing funk, disco, techno and two-step.

Weather
Sydney has mild winters and warm summers and the climate in this city is considered to be moderate. The rainfall comes throughout the year. The inland western suburbs record extreme temperatures, while more moderate temperatures can be found by the ocean.

Lake Eyre Basin - Australia

Tuesday, August 10th, 2010

A Once in a Lifetime Opportunity:

Lake Eyre Basin is the lowest point on the continent of Australia, situated 50 feet below sea level.  This basin is normally deserted to most life forms.  This otherwise ordinary and deserted area, however, reawakens roughly once every 50 years when this empty basin that is twice the size of Texas fills itself with water.  It is at this point that this area turns into a world phenomenon and fills itself with water.  Currently, there are travel packages available in order to see this wonder first hand.

The package to see this natural wonder begins on September 11th and ends on September 22nd with a price of $6,099 per person.  This package includes a roundtrip airfare, accommodations, park entry fees, meals and nine days of touring with an experienced tour guide.

Lake Eyre - Dry

This Eyre Basin normally has very little or no water that usually does not host any form of life.  When it fills up, it becomes a flourishing oasis and serves as a breeding ground for up to six million birds.  Some of these birds travel all the way from Japan and China.  Other species come out of 50 years of hibernation including frogs and other amphibians.  Wild camels are even drawn to the Eyre Basin.  This serves as an excellent sight for tourists who are able to enjoy the beauty of the lake in addition to the vast assortment of wildlife that you won’t ever find come together anywhere else.

In the last 150 years, Lake Eyre Basin has only filled itself to capacity three different times.  This year, the high waters are making this basin a must-see for travelers to see a whole new side of Australia.

Lake Eyre - Wet

While traveling to Lake Eyre Basin, there are many sight-seeing opportunities to help to gain an even greater appreciation for Australia.  This includes the isolated mining city known as Broken Hill.  Mutawintji National Park is also a must-see area with beautiful gorges and serves as a historical site with Aboriginal rock Art.  Another notable park is Sturt National Park with breathtaking red sand dunes.  Other notable places to explore that are included in the Lake Eyre Basin include the towns of Innamincka, Diamantina River, Birdsville, the old settlement of Marree, the Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary, and the Gammon Ranges National Park.

Sydney – Australia

Friday, April 30th, 2010

Large sandy beaches, a wide variety of wildlife and speed boats, make it obvious you have left the familiar environment of your home. Sydney is a unique city, with lots of attractions suitable for the whole family. Australia with its unique flora and fauna will never seize to amaze, providing breathtaking scenery, along with a lively nightlife and plenty of sites to visit, it is a place where children as well as the parents are set for a great time during their holidays.

Where there are beaches there is water, and at the Sydney Harbour you will find many different vessels ranging from private yachts to a fully fledged destroyer and submarine from the Australian military. It is also the home of the famous “Spirit of Australia”, which ranks amongst the fastest ships in the world.

A ride on the ferry will take you to Manly, passing each of the gorgeous golden beaches and pines. Once there, be sure to tag along with the others to the main beach and avoid the smaller ones next to the ferry terminal. Also while you are there, be sure to take a walk over the Harbour Bridge. You will see scenery that will take your breath away, and when you feel up to it, participate in a three hour climb organized by BridgeClimb, that will take you to the highest point which is over 400ft above the water.

Sydney – Torango Zoo

The Taronga Zoo was built on a large hill that provides a view over large parts of Sydney, just like the Harbour and the Opera House. The Zoo itself contains plenty to see with an excellent selection of wildlife, including facilities where one can observe the nocturnal wildlife of Australia up close, providing a sight rarely seen otherwise. It is also the home of Australia’s official Easter Bunny.

Sydney also houses one of the largest interactive museums of the world, with many exhibits all related to the technological accomplishments of mankind. Allow yourself to be fascinated by the many wonders of technology as the trip will be well worth the time.

Of course a trip to Sydney would not be complete without visiting at least one of the wildlife reservations it holds. The animal selection is nothing short of awesome and all the animals are well treated. Surely you would not want to pass up the opportunity of going on camera with Australia’s most famous animal, The Koala.

Besides wildlife and museums, Sydney offers plenty of opportunity to shop and of course excellent waves for surfers at Coogee Beach.
